Interview with Uschi, dating August, 25 2006, about her career ending, her future plans and her vacation in New Zealand.
Uschi, tell us about your New Zealand trip... how did you like it and what did you do on the island? Well, it was wonderful. We discovered New Zealand by traveling in a camper for 5 weeks. We visited all sights on our way, first on the southern island and later on the northern island. We weren’t too lucky with the weather condition, the weather in the South was nice but cool ‘cause it was already autumn over there. And in the northern part we had really awful weather, it was cold and rainy. On our volcano trip we had to wait three days in heavy rain before we could climb the mountain. But after this heavy downpour it was really nice weather with much sunshine and we made a volcano tour of 7 hours.
...So you did really walk straight over the volcanos? Sure, we climbed on the top of a volcano and had the chance to glance into its inner life. But I’ve tought this view to be more spectacular than it actually was because this was not an active volcano. There’s just Mount Ruapehu which is an active one, but during autumn time you’re not allowed to climb this volcano. You can only do it in summer with a special tour guide because it would be too dangerous to walk up there alone. Not because of a possible erruption but because it is a glacier with many crevasses. And, well, the one we climbed on was nothig spectacular, it was just a mere crater.
...So there was nothing bubbling and seething in the crater? No,no. That’s how I imagined it to be, too, but no bubbling at all. I thought that maybe there’s some kind of lake in it but there was just a little bit of snow deep down inside of it and that was all. But anyway, it was nice. By the way, we were also in Singapoure for four days...
...because you had to make a stopover there? Yes, and we booked this detour extra because it was not much more expense. But about New Zealand again, we tried to visit as much as possible, from mountains to valleys, everything. It would be too much to recount....
So New Zealand was just like you imagined it to be before your trip? Yes, it was just beautiful. We also visited the famous “hot pools”, some kind of geysers, that was fantastic, particulary when the weather was cold!
Was it very crowded on the island because in contrast to Australia, New Zealand is such a small but even popular holiday island.... No, it was not crowded at all. Well, if you travel there in summer time, the island is overflown with tourists but when we were there it was already autum and the main travel time was over. We just met some Japanese tourists at a famous den with glow worms. But the sights which were accessible only by walking were deserted.
Ok, seems like a real dream vacation......Exactly!
Tell me, what has changed in your life since you ceased from your active career and did you miss anything since then? No, I don’t miss anything at all. I mean, I ceased from doing biathlon because I was sure that it was time to stop. In New Zealand we did a lot of sports, we trained nearly every second day, so I didn’t miss the physical action. And when I came home, I didn’t came home alone...this was really a wonderful suprise for all of us...
...Did you know about your pregancy just after you came back from New Zealand? No, I didn’t. Shortly after the vacation I was on Ivett’s wedding and we really rocked the house there, with booze and everything! Just one week later I came to know about my pregnancy. But of course I didn’t stop my training at once and moreover I also took part in this skiroller race in Norway. But now, I’m not able to do much sports. Yesterday I tried to go jogging for half an hour, that was ok, but nothing more!
Yes, I think its important to be active as long as its possible even in a pregnancy......True! Cycling for example is ok, too. But now as we were moving into the new house I didn’t have time to do sports because we were busy the whole day. During the first days there was no chance to go to bed before midnight. So I really wasn’t bored druing the last weeks!
And what do you enjoy most about you life after your biathlon career? That I don’t have to pack my bags and go away for training or competition anymore. And I enjoy having time for things I couldn’t do during my active career. The moving to our house for example would not have been possible in such a short period of time if I still had trained. In this case we could have worked in the house just a few hours a day at noon or in the evenings. And I really enjoy having time for the little things in life now!
What about your plans about working as a TV- commentator? Well, of couse it won’t work for the next season because the due date for our baby is January, 16th and this is quite inconvenient for a job as biathlon commentator.
And what about the coming years? I’m really interested in doing this job but I have no idea how the TV stations think about it...if they still want me later...
Well, if they want you know they’ll want you later, too.......We’ll see that. I don’t worry about it at the moment. But who knows what the future brings....
Ok, thank you for the interview Uschi!
